Project Objectives

This initiative supports emerging Japanese creators—composers, sound designers, and engineers—who work at the intersection of music and digital technology. By providing opportunities for them to create and present their work at world-class venues, the project aims to cultivate globally recognized talent and enhance Japan’s international cultural presence. By supporting these activities, it also broadens the expertise of institutional staff and contributes to strengthening the organization’s foundation.

Project Approach

In collaboration with IRCAM in Paris, a world-leading contemporary music institute, this project commissions new works from three young Japanese composers. Through creative collaboration with IRCAM engineers and performances in both Japan and France, the staff of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan will also take part in the process, enhancing their skills and promoting international exchange. This initiative aims to advance Japan’s electronic and contemporary music scene.

(Tokyo Bunka Kaikan)

Affectionately known as a “temple of music and performing arts,” the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan has been a beloved cultural landmark for over 60 years. In 2022, it appointed composer Ichiro Nodaira as Music Director and embraced a new mission to champion contemporary music through its self-produced programs. In 2024, the venue launched the Festival L’intemporel – Music Across Eras, a unique festival that brings classical and contemporary music together in collaborations with international festivals and organizations.
