Project Objectives

Oita is Japan’s foremost region for bamboo craft and home to two Living National Treasures. This project aims to nurture the next generation of bamboo artists who can succeed globally, while promoting the charm of Japanese bamboo craft to new international audiences and expanding its untapped market potential. It also strengthens the international curatorial capacity of museum staff, positioning the museum as a global hub for bamboo-based art and craft.

Project Approach

By nurturing emerging bamboo artists and spotlighting Oita’s unique bamboo culture, the museum will share its value with the world. Projects will include collaborations with renowned artists, participation in international art fairs, and domestic and international exhibitions. Through these activities, as well as curatorial collaborations with the museum’s collection, the initiative will strengthen curators’ planning and presentation skills and elevate Oita’s presence in the global art scene.

Oita City (Oita Art Museum)

Oita Art Museum, located in Ueno Hill Children’s Forest Park, offers an inclusive space for art appreciation under the motto “Enjoy, See, and Learn.” The museum hosts collection exhibitions featuring works from its permanent holdings, special exhibitions highlighting outstanding art from various fields, and a wide range of educational programs for both children and adults.
