Project Objectives

This program aims to develop curators from the Mori Art Museum’s team—including coordinators and assistants—as well as emerging and mid-career curators from across Japan, through the planning and production of exhibitions, international tours, and symposia. The ultimate goal is to cultivate professionals capable of serving as artistic directors or producers at major international art festivals such as biennales and triennales. Through this process, the project also seeks to enhance the Mori Art Museum’s operational capacity and international reputation, thereby strengthening Japan’s ability to communicate contemporary culture to the world.

Project Approach

This project aims to nurture mid-career and young curators to the level of artistic directors or producers at international art festivals like triennials and biennials, while strengthening the museums that support their activities. It pursues these goals through two initiatives: architect Sou Fujimoto’s overseas touring exhibition and a curator development program.

Mori Building Co., Ltd. (Mori Art Museum)

Opened in 2003 atop Roppongi Hills, the Mori Art Museum was founded based on Mori Building’s vision of a “Cultural City.” Through exhibitions and educational programs, the museum addresses cultural and social issues while actively supporting young artists from Japan and Asia. As a contemporary art museum open to the world, it showcases pioneering works in visual art, architecture, and design from diverse regions through a unique curatorial perspective, while striving to realize a society where art enriches everyday life—an ideal it calls “Art + Life.”
