Theatre-Based Comprehensive Talent Development and International Promotion

Setagaya Public Theatre

Official Social Media

Project Objectives

Over a five-year period, the theater will implement a series of focused programs aimed at training young creators—including directors, translators, playwrights, and theater staff—who are expected to excel internationally. Utilizing the theater’s full production facilities, including rehearsal and workshop spaces, the initiative will support comprehensive artistic development. By nurturing globally capable talent, the project will also reinforce the theater’s role as a hub for training and creation.

Project Approach

This program develops emerging artists and young theater staff under artistic director Akira Shirai and experienced mentors. Through OJT and collaborative creation, participants learn international co-production methods with European and Asian theaters. Works are presented domestically and abroad to build and strengthen global theater networks.

Setagaya Arts Foundation (Setagaya Public Theatre)

Setagaya Public Theatre, operated by the Setagaya Arts Foundation, is a performing arts venue focused on contemporary theater and dance. It comprises the main stage and a smaller venue, Theatre Tram, and has pursued two central missions since its opening in 1997: the creation and presentation of original productions, and education and talent development programs. In April 2022, the theater welcomed director and actor Akira Shirai as Artistic Director.
