Project Objectives

The theater, which appointed Midori Kurata as the new artistic director of the dance department from FY2024, is working to strengthen its dance programs.. The project aims to establish contemporary dance as a core part of local culture and to cultivate new audiences beyond those already familiar with theater. By offering experiences unique to this region to both artists and the community, the theater strives to function as a cultural institution capable of directly sharing its unique artistic identity from a regional city to the world.

Project Approach

Under the guidance of Midori Kurata, Artistic Director of the dance division, three dancer-choreographers and one production coordinator will be in residence in Matsumoto City on a recurring basis. They will create new works inspired by the region's nature, traditional arts, and community. Aligned with the theatre’s “open theatre” concept, they will engage the community while nurturing talent to promote the unique art born from this region globally.
