Official Social Media

Project Objectives

Traditional Japanese music faces challenges in preserving its techniques and traditions, due to a shrinking domestic audience and support base. This project aims to foster the next generation of musicians and producers involved in traditional Japanese music. In addition to preserving tradition, it will promote the appeal of this music overseas, creating a positive cycle in which Japanese music is embraced around the world.

Project Approach

This project promotes the charm of Japanese traditional music both domestically and internationally, providing promising young musicians with global opportunities. It supports the preservation and development of performance skills, activates the industry through various related initiatives, and fosters exchanges among stakeholders and partners to ensure sustainable growth.

The Association for International Exchange of Japanese Music

The Association for International Exchange of Japanese Music was founded in 1988 by musicologists, performers, and cultural experts with the goal of promoting Japanese music internationally. In 2000, the association was officially certified as a specified non-profit organization by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Internationally, the association has held concerts with local language commentary, while in Japan it has offered similar events and workshops in foreign languages for international residents. It also develops and maintains a publicly available online database of traditional Japanese music, conducts training for local music teachers, and collaborates on innovations such as the development of the Fukuyama-style koto. Through these efforts, it promotes a deeper understanding of Japanese music both in Japan and abroad.
