Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to systematically develop documentary makers who can bring Japanese documentaries to international audiences. Through film festivals, broadcasting, and streaming platforms, participants will showcase their works to global audiences and promote recognition of the richness and quality of Japan’s documentary culture. This will strengthen the international presence of Japanese content and help build a sustainable foundation for documentary production.

Project Approach

The project will build a practical curriculum covering project development, fundraising, directing, language skills, pitching, and international collaboration. International expansion will be achieved through participation in overseas film festivals, markets, and international co-productions. The project will also improve working conditions and contract practices while building a sustainable production foundation. Furthermore, it will promote Japanese works worldwide and enhance international understanding and trust by presenting authentic perspectives on Japan.

Tokyo Docs

Non-Profit Organization Tokyo Docs is responsible for the operation of Tokyo Docs, an international pitching event launched in 2011. It aims to strengthen the international co-production of documentaries from Japan. Since 2025, it has also launched J-Docs Hub (a development program for global documentary creatives supported by Japan Creator Support Fund) as an additional initiative, working to nurture internationally active documentary professionals.
