Project Objectives
This project aims to establish a sustainable platform for the international development of Japan's performing arts. To this end, it will design and implement talent development programs — accessible to both educational institutions and private-sector organizations — targeting students aspiring to become playwrights, directors, and producers. Participants will acquire the skills and professional mindset needed to succeed in international markets. The project will draw on research conducted both in Japan and abroad to define the competencies required for international rollout. Grounded in these findings, educational programs will be designed, piloted, and carefully evaluated. Those that prove effective will be established as replicable models, with the overarching aim of nurturing the next generation of performing arts talent and strengthening Japan's international presence in the field.
Project Approach
The project will begin by conducting structured interviews with educational institutions and private-sector organizations to identify the competencies required of internationally active arts professionals and the systemic challenges involved in developing them. On this basis, a range of programs may be explored and piloted on a trial basis — potentially including research placements, curriculum development initiatives, and internship programs. Insights gathered through each initiative will inform the development of a model curriculum. This curriculum will be implemented alongside complementary programs addressing professional well-being and working conditions, with the aim of supporting the comprehensive development of the next generation of performing arts talent.
