Project Objectives

The organization aims to train internationally active artists capable of engaging in borderless creative work. Recognizing that opera training is most effective through participation in full-scale productions, Nikikai will leverage its long-standing relationships with major opera houses in Europe and the United States to implement a multi-year international collaboration. Through these efforts, it seeks to develop a new generation of role models in Japanese opera.

Project Approach

Over the course of a year, at least one opera production is planned domestically or abroad to nurture singers and staff. Selected vocalists receive opportunities to perform with world-class singers, workshops, and private training to build skills for global stages. Staff also gain necessary skills through involvement in productions, supporting their international careers.

Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation

Founded in 1952 by four leading singers, Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation was established to advance the study and presentation of vocal music and to promote solidarity grounded in mutual support. It is now the largest vocal music organization in Japan, with over 2,600 full and associate members. In 1977, the Nikikai Opera Foundation was created to establish a stable financial base for opera, and in 2010, the organization was restructured under its current name. In addition to producing an average of five operas annually, Nikikai also presents choral concerts and nurtures the next generation of opera singers through its Nikikai Opera Institute.
