Project Objectives

Japan's Performing Arts scene is characterized by its rich diversity, encompassing everything from traditional performing arts cultivated over centuries to modern theater and musicals introduced in the postwar era. This project leverages that diversity as a strength, aiming to create a framework through which Japanese producers and other creators can confidently pursue international opportunities. By participating in international festivals and presenting outcomes domestically, the project promotes the appeal of Japanese performing arts. It also seeks to establish a new cross-genre network that fosters knowledge sharing and innovation, contributing to the advancement of Japan’s performing arts industry and the development of a new ecosystem within the field.

Project Approach

This project aims to build a new foundation for Japan’s overseas performing arts strategy by
(1) creating international learning programs,
(2) dispatching artists to global markets like the Edinburgh International Festival, and
(3) promoting digital distribution.
It also accumulates know-how and shares it with the industry, fostering emerging producers with a global perspective.

Japan Performing Arts Solidarity Network

JPASN was established in response to the government's sudden request for self-restraint in February 2020, and was prompted by a survey to ascertain the actual state of damage in the performing arts world, where performances were cancelled or postponed one after another. The organization was incorporated in September 2021 and is currently working with more than 250 members as an information platform for the strong and sustainable development of a wide variety of performing arts organizations in cooperation with each other.
